The axle on your Toyota is a central rod or shaft that's responsible for supporting the vehicle's weight and turning your wheels. Most cars have two, with some larger vehicles equipped with even more.

Types of Axles

There are three main kinds: front, rear, and stub. The front axle is typically made of either carbon steel or nickel steel and sits at the front of your vehicle as you'd expect. It assists with steering and adjustments to jolts and bumps from bad road conditions. They come in two forms. Dead front axles stay in place, whereas live front axles rotate with the wheels to transfer power from the transmission to the wheels.

Rear axles deliver power to the wheels that drive your Toyota. There are two half shafts that connect via the differential to form the rear axle. Most are live and rotate with the wheels. Semi-floating rear axles are found on most cars, light duty pickups, and SUVs. Three-quarter-floating rear axles are more reliable. Full-floating rear axles are generally reserved for large vehicles like heavy-duty pickup trucks.

A stub axle connects to the front axle and come in four subtypes. Those are Elliot, reverse Elliot, Lamoine, and reverse Lamoine. Each type connects to the front axle in different ways and uses different parts to do so.

How to Spot Axle Issues

Even the best axles can eventually go bad. Signs of this include:

  • Loud clunking noises when you shift into gear
  • Your Toyota won't move even when it's running
  • You feel vibrations as you're driving
