Some models have gauges for every system. Others have warning lights to indicate status instead -- for instance, in place of a temperature gauge, an oil pressure gauge, or a charging system gauge. It then sends speed information as a signal to a gauge that's electronically driven. The odometer, however, reads the total mileage a vehicle has traveled across its lifetime.

There are several causes for why dash gauges and lights may not be working. They range from blown fuses, bad ground connections, and loose wiring to a bad sending unit or a failed instrument cluster. If you see these signs, you may need new gauges.
