The camshafts are crucial when it comes to your engine functioning properly. They're made up of two distinct parts, a cam and a shaft, and are responsible for activating the intake and exhaust valves for the engine cylinders.

What Camshafts Do

In a modern overhead cam engine, the camshaft is located in the cylinder head. Single overhead cam engines have one cam per bank, placed between the valve stems. Rocker arms transmit the movement to the valves. A dual overhead cam engine has two cams in each bank. They're typically placed directly over the valve stems. One cam serves the intake valves, with the other responsible for exhaust valves.

Put simply, when the shaft portion of the camshaft rotates, the cams (or lobes) push the valves open in sync with the crankshaft gears. Camshafts are usually connected to the crankshaft by a timing belt, though newer models may have a timing chain instead.

How to Spot Camshaft Problems

Camshafts are typically made from a cast steel blank, though custom and performance camshafts may be milled out of a solid block of steel. The fact that they're solid steel makes them less likely to wear out or break than other engine parts. However, there are some ways a camshaft can go bad and inhibit engine performance. These include:

  • Worn lifters, which fail to lift the valve as far as they should, can be signaled by a clattering or tapping noise in the valve cover
  • Worn cam lobes won’t open the valves as much as intended, leading to misfires and increased emissions
  • A broken camshaft, while rare, can be a result of a camshaft seizure and could result in significant damage to other engine parts
  • Genuine OEM Camshafts Are Your Best Option

Don't take chances with your engine's health and performance. If you notice any of these symptoms, have your engine thoroughly examined. If a camshaft or lifter is at fault, replace it ASAP with a like part made by your manufacturer. They were designed specifically to work in your model's engine, ensuring the compatible fit and performance you need. Our online auto parts store has what you need for the job.
