Your cylinder head is essentially a housing that sits under your vehicle's hood on the top of the engine block. Made of either aluminum or cast iron, it contains essential engine parts like the combustion chamber, intake and exhaust valves, lifters, and springs. It does three things, and it does them well.

What Cylinder Heads Do

A cylinder head takes in air and fuel while expelling exhaust gases. It also helps to keep the engine cooled and running at the ideal temperature by directing coolant into the engine block. Lastly, it teams with the head gasket to help keep water or oil from leaking into your combustion chamber.

Types of Cylinder Heads

There are three main kinds. A flathead primarily protects the cylinder blocks, and has no moving parts to worry about. An overhead valve, which sits below camshafts, has pushrods and valves that connect and even out the airflow. Finally, an overhead camshaft has camshaft contained within, which negates the need for pushrods. This type delivers optimal airflow and increased engine efficiency.

How to Spot a Faulty Cylinder Head

Unfortunately, even the best cylinder head can eventually go bad. Signs of failure include:

  • Excessive exhaust smoke -- a sure sign of leaking valve stems
  • Misfiring engine
  • Cracks in the cylinder head
  • Leaking coolant
  • Engine performance issues
  • Your engine oil looks milky due to leaking coolant
