Your intake manifold gasket is essential equipment, as it seals the intake manifold to your vehicle's engine. If it weren't there, your Toyota or Scion would suffer serious problems.

How Your Intake Gasket Works

First, it's helpful to learn how your intake manifold works. As air passes through your engine air filter, the throttle body controls the speed of the air flow. The air exits the throttle body and enters the intake manifold, which is bolted to the engine's cylinder head. The air then is then sent through a series of passageways to mix with fuel in the cylinder below. Together, the air and fuel feed engine combustion.

The manifold gasket forms the seal needed to prevent leaks or engine overheating. Since oil and coolant can cause them to decay, they need to be made of a durable material such as aluminized steel that's coated in a carbon-based rubber compound. However, that doesn't guarantee that the manifold gasket won't eventually wear out over time. That's not ideal.

How to Spot a Bad Manifold Gasket

Signs of gasket failure include:

  • Overheating engine
  • Rough-running engine
  • Coolant leaks, as indicated by pools of red, yellow, or green liquid under your vehicle
  • Your "Check Engine" light comes on
