The water pump in your Toyota Prius moves water from its radiator through its engine and back again. This helps the engine stay at a constant temperature whatever the weather, so it can function as best it can. It also helps keep it from overheating. So, how do water pumps work? It's straightforward. First, water moves from the radiator through the motor, and it heats up as it travels. The water pump then returns the liquid to the radiator, where it can cool off. The process repeats. More specifically, though, in most vehicles today, the engine turns the water pump's belt, which rotates its axle in turn, and the axle movement creates suction. This pulls water out of the radiator. As the fluid reaches the pump, centrifugal force churns it against the pump's outer walls. The water then heads down a drain into the engine block, where it goes through the engine's cylinder heads and drains into the radiator. Unfortunately, water pumps can fail as they age.

What are the Signs a Water Pump is Going Bad?

There are many. They include a lit temperature warning light, a lit low-coolant warning light, coolant leaks, a loose water pump pulley, and low grinding noises as your engine runs. If you see any of these symptoms, run an inspection to figure out the problem. You can buy a new genuine Toyota Prius water pump right from your OEM. Doing so will ensure the best fit for your hybrid. Order online from our auto parts counter today!
