The water pump in your Toyota or Scion moves water back and forth between the radiator and engine. This general cooling process helps the engine stay at the proper temperature so it can keep working right and avoid overheating. How vehicle water pumps work is simple.

First, water travels from the radiator through the engine, heating up as it goes. The water then gets sent back to the radiator, where it cools off once again, and the process repeats. More specifically, the engine turns the water pump's belt, which spins its axle -- a movement that creates suction, pulling the water out of the radiator. When water reaches the pump, centrifugal force propels it against the outer walls, at which point, it drains into the engine block, passes through the cylinder heads, and gets sent back to the radiator once more.

Unfortunately, water pumps don't last indefinitely. They can fail from age. Luckily, when they go bad, there are symptoms to tell you. They include:

  • A lit temperature warning light on the dash
  • A low-coolant warning/li>
  • A coolant leak
  • A loose pulley
  • Grinding noises while the engine's running

If you're seeing any of these signs, run a careful inspection. If it turns out you need a new water pump, you can order one here online.
