Whether you drive a Toyota or a Scion vehicle, it has all kinds of gauges. They're found on the dashboard, and they're all critical to understanding how well everything in the car is working.

Some models have gauges for every system. Others have warning lights to indicate status instead -- for instance, in place of a temperature gauge, an oil pressure gauge, or a charging system gauge. There are a few common to most cars, trucks, and SUVs, though -- for example, the speedometer. It uses an electronic sensor to determine wheel speed. It then sends speed information as a signal to a gauge that's electronically driven. If you drive an older Toyota or Scion model, you might have a cable and tube assembly instead of some of the electronics.

The fuel gauge is another example. It show just how much gas is left in the fuel tank. The tachometer analyzes engine turns in rpm (revolutions per minute). This is most useful if you're driving a vehicle with a manual transmission ("stick shift") and you want to change gears at the best rpm for either fuel economy or speed. The odometer, however, reads the total mileage a vehicle has traveled across its lifetime.

There are several causes for why dash gauges and lights may not be working. They range from blown fuses, bad ground connections, and loose wiring to a bad sending unit or a failed instrument cluster. If you see these signs, you may need new gauges.
