Brakes stop a Toyota Matrix, but brake pads create the friction necessary for stopping. Your hatchback has one of four types, depending on its factory equipment. Organic brake pads are the most common for everyday driving. They're dependable, they don't wear out brake rotors as easily, and they don't create a lot of dust. Best of all, they're low-cost. Ceramic brake pads are an improvement. They work a little better in foul weather, they don't make a lot of noise, and their dust doesn't tick as badly when it hits your wheels. Metallic brake pads are an even better upgrade. They withstand higher heat, feel firm during a brake pedal press, and, perhaps best of all, they resist brake fade. Carbon fiber brake pads are the best performers. They're the strongest construction, they tolerate very high temperatures, and they deliver the most effective stopping power. Most cars use either metallic or organic types, but many sports cars use ceramic or carbon fiber types because they do the best job dispersing heat. However, no brake pad can last forever, not even the top-quality ones Toyota makes for its Matrix. Be sure to replace yours every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so. Otherwise, figure out when to change them the most obvious way: by looking for signs of bad brakes. Beyond warning lights, they include worn pad surfaces, damaged pad, whiny brakes, and taking a lot longer to stop. The worst symptoms are vibration and grinding. They indicate rotor warp and damage owing to degraded brake pads. If you need to buy new ones, get genuine Toyota. They're guaranteed to fit your Matrix.
