What does a radiator do for your Toyota MR2? Put simply, it keeps your sports car's engine from running too hot. In fact, radiators keep cars running cool enough to help prevent overheating. How they work generally, though, is a little more complicated. The process starts inside that coupe, T-top, or convertible you love, with coolant. As its engine runs, it produces heat -- a lot of it. The liquid captures the heat as it flows through a radiator hose and between inlets and outlets. A radiator cap pressurizes the coolant as it moves, which helps it absorb more heat than it could uncompressed. After it takes on all it can, the fins on the outside of the radiator expel the heat, and a fan disperses it into the air. The result: your motor not only keeps working right but also lasts longer. Sometimes, a factory radiator can go bad, though. When it does, it usually causes all sorts of issues.

What Are the Signs of Radiator Problems?

There are a few and spotting them is easy. For instance, your HVAC can start malfunctioning. Secondly, your engine can overheat; when that happens, it'll usually shut down completely. You can also look for fin damage and mucky coolant, listen for weird engine noises, and smell for the sweet, syrupy odor of ethylene glycol (which suggests a coolant leak). If you think you might have radiator failure on your hands, though, check your temperature gauge. If your engine's running hot, the gauge's needle will tell you. Then, inspect your vehicle carefully. If the results indicate you need a radiator replacement, avoid the aftermarket: go genuine OEM. A radiator made by Toyota for your MR2 specifically will fit it best.
