There are transmission types galore for sale these days, from automated manual (AM) and continuously variable (CVT) to dual- or twin-clutch (DCT). However, two kinds are still the most common: manual and automatic. You press your clutch, an input shaft separates, you shift into the right gear, a linkage connects a locking collar and an output shaft, you release the clutch, the input shaft re-engages, the output shaft spins, and you keep on driving, without your engine going beyond its rpm range (redline). An automatic transmission, on the other hand, is a little simpler. There's no clutch to step on, and it brings a fluid coupling converter into the mix. This "torque converter" links your engine and transmission and shifts gears using hydraulic (fluid) pressure. Sooner or later, though, either type of transmissions can fail.

What are the Signs a Transmission May Be Going Out?

Luckily, there are many. Does your clutch feel abnormal, even slippery? Does your engine rev a little high? Perhaps you smell burning after releasing the clutch or hear grinding or other noises while shifting. If you have these symptoms -- and if changing gears feels delayed, or you can't find a gear at all -- you likely have a bad manual transmission. If you hear whining, clunking, or humming, gears begin slipping, or your transmission fluid's leaking, your automatic transmission is probably failing.
