What is an AC compressor in a car? Put simply, compressors power air conditioners. The one in your Toyota Prius puts your AC system's gaseous refrigerant under pressure before it passes it on to a condenser, which transforms it into a liquid. The fluid passes through an expansion valve, where it becomes a gas again, this time, at lower pressure. Finally, an evaporator rapidly cools the gas, with help from a fan. The resulting chilled air travels through your hybrid's ducts, out its vents, and into your cabin, keeping you comfortable when it's warm outside. An engine accessory belt drives the AC compressor itself, though, and if that belt gets too worn out and slips, it's just one of many causes of compressor problems.

What are the Signs a Car AC Compressor is Going Bad?

There are a few to look for. One is when cabin temperatures seem to be higher than normal. In this case, a couple compressor parts might've already failed, or your air conditioning might be leaking refrigerant. Another is when a compressor runs noisily. Yet another is when your compressor clutch has seized up, gotten stuck, or isn't otherwise moving. In any case, run an inspection. If it turns out you need a new AC compressor for your Toyota Prius, you can order a genuine OEM one from our auto parts counter. It'll come straight from your brand, guaranteeing compatibility with your hybrid. So, save valuable project time -- buy one online today!
