You've probably taken a good look at the wheels on your Toyota Prius plenty of times. They're sleek, after all. What makes them so? Your factory hubcaps. You can usually get two kinds. One is full-size; it's often also called a wheel cover. It usually snaps on or bolts to a wheel, covering its entire face, both its hub and its fasteners. The other is a smaller cover, on a wheel's center. It's called a center cap, though the industry sometimes refers to it as a cap insert or wheel cap. What might surprise you: hubcaps and rims are different. A rim is simply the outer edge of a wheel. Unlike a hubcap, it's almost always made of a metal like steel, or an alloy. The job of a rim is to hold a tire firmly to a wheel. Plus, to change rims, you have to change wheels. Hubcaps are a snap to replace when they crack or get bent or broken. You can even just do it when your style preferences change. Either way, a hubcap has a couple jobs -- concealment and protection. They hide the center of a wheel hub and its lug nuts, and they keep dirt and moisture away from spindle nuts. They do both of these things for wheel bearings. Best of all, they offer a more stylish look, showing off your brand, model, even sometimes a logo.
