The gas engine in your Toyota Prius burns fuel and oxygen to create the electricity it uses in part to run. Its spark plugs ignite the mixture. The process works like this. Stick your key in the lock cylinder in your ignition system and turn it. An ignition switch triggers, and many other ignition parts start working -- everything from your hybrid battery and a starter motor to a solenoid and an ignition coil, to name a few. Together, they generate an electrical charge. That charge gets sent to the plugs. When the plugs' leads capture it, the air and gas inside your engine combust, and that generates power. A few engine piston pumps and crankshaft turns later, your hybrid's many moving parts get going. Without spark plugs, though, it wouldn't start up at all. To make matters worse, they can go bad. Their leads can widen. Sometimes, they rust. This weakens sparks. Engine misfires and shutdowns usually result. Broken spark plugs, though, usually cause severe damage to engine cylinder. Luckily, Toyota builds its spark plugs to last, for up to 100,000 miles and millions of ignitions. Just be sure you change any coming up on their recommended mileage limits. You can usually find info on that in your owner's manual.
