What an Alternator Does

For your Toyota Sienna to run right, its battery needs charging, and its electrical systems need power. To get those results, its alternator converts mechanical energy into electricity. That current helps run everything from your minivan's dashboard's lights and displays, its power windows, and its entertainment system to its power steering and windshield wipers and wiper blades. The current also helps warm heated seats.

How an Alternator Works

The process is simple. First, your van's engine moves a belt. This belt drives a pulley on the alternator. That pulley turns a rotor shaft, which then spins magnetic coils.

The moving coils generate alternating current, more commonly known as AC power. A rectifier on the alternator captures the current and turns it into its direct form, DC power. This is how your van starts and stays running.

Unfortunately, alternator failure can happen, often because of bad jump-starts, incompatible accessory installs, and damaged or degraded alternator parts. Luckily, the alternator trouble is fairly easy to spot.

Signs of Alternator Problems

If you see any of the following symptoms, run a full inspection to figure out what's going on, and be sure to test your minivan's charging system.

  • Headlights and car radio not working properly
  • A burning smell under your hood, near your alternator or battery
  • A whining engine
  • A dead battery
  • Charging system problems or failure

If it turns out you need an alternator change, take care of it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you should replace an alternator every 7 years. That's every 80,000 to 150,000 miles or so. For more details on that, take a look at your owner's manual.
