What Brake Pads Do

As integral parts of your minivan's brake system, they're what create the friction that slows its wheels and stops its tires. For any brake pad to do that, though, a brake caliper must clamp it to a corresponding brake rotor. How well brake pads do their job, however, depends on what kind they are.

The Different Types of Brake Pads

There are four primary ones: organic, metallic, ceramic, and carbon fiber. Organic brake pads are best for everyday driving and relatively cost-effective, while metallic brake pads feel firmer and withstand high heat and brake fade. Many cars and SUVs use these. Ceramic brake pads, on the other hand, are better for bad weather and fairly quiet to boot, while carbon fiber brake pads are the toughest and best performers, as they're tolerant of extreme heat and have the best stopping power. Many sports cars and performance vehicles use them.

Unfortunately, no brake pad lasts forever. You should change yours regularly.

When Brake Pads Need Replacing

Check your owner's manual. It should tell you to change them every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. However, it's also a good idea to watch for signs your brakes are going bad. They'll suggest it's time to inspect.

Besides the obvious lights on the dash (ABS warnings and brake warnings, specifically), symptoms of bad brakes include

  • Damaged or decayed pads
  • Whining noises during braking
  • Taking longer to slow down and stop
  • Vibrating during braking
  • Grinding noises

The last usually means rotor warp, if not outright damage. Its probable cause: worn-out brake pads.
