As the engine in your Toyota Sienna runs, it puts out serious heat. Your radiator helps keep it from overheating. How radiators work is straightforward. The process starts with coolant, commonly known as antifreeze, which moves back and forth through radiator hoses -- an inlet hose and an outlet hose, to be exact. While it travels, a radiator cap pressurizes it, and the liquid traps as much heat as it can until the radiator's fins can expel it. At that point, a fan disperses it into the air nearby.
The result: your minivan's engine works as well as it can, and because of that, it lasts longer. Radiators don't last indefinitely, though: sometimes, they go bad, and when that happens, HVAC malfunctions, overheats, and engine failure can occur. Luckily, the symptoms of a bad radiator are easy to spot. They include:
- Odd engine noises
- Damaged radiator fins
- Gooey antifreeze
- The sweet, syrupy aroma of ethylene glycol (usually indicating leaking antifreeze)
Radiator problems are one thing, though. Complete radiator failure is another. If the needle or digital display on your van's temperature gauge reads too hot, you might be dealing with the latter. Run a full inspection to figure out exactly what may be going on.
