Your Toyota Sienna water pump moves water back and forth between its radiator and engine. This general cooling process helps the latter stay at the right temperature so it can keep working properly and avoid overheating.

How water pumps work is simple. First, water passes from your radiator through your engine, heating up as it travels. The liquid then gets shunted back to the radiator, where it cools off again, and the process repeats. More specifically, your engine spins the water pump's belt, which turns its axle, a movement which creates suction, pulling the water out of your radiator. When water reaches the pump, centrifugal force drives it against the pump's outer walls, at which point, it goes down a drain into your engine block, passes through the cylinder heads, and gets sent back into the radiator.

Unfortunately, no water pump lasts indefinitely. They can fail as they age. Luckily, there are signs of a bad one. Look for the following:

  • A lit temperature warning or a low-coolant warning on the dash
  • Coolant leakage
  • A loose pulley
  • Low grinding noises during engine operation

If you're seeing any of these symptoms, run a full inspection. If it turns out you need a new water pump, you can buy one here on the Web.
